About Sunny Side Up!

Hello and welcome to Sunny Side Up. My name’s Melissa Kagerer aka Mel and I am the creator of everything here at Sunny Side Up. I was born and raised outside of Atlanta, Georgia and went to school at Columbia College Chicago where I graduated with a BFA in Photography. In addition to focusing on photography in school and the majority of my adult life, I’ve always been interested in traditional crafts and functional art.

I started making macrame plant hangers on a whim in 2019. My houseplant collection was getting quite large but I was struggling to find any macrame plant hangers that I liked and that matched my colorful aesthetic. At the beginning of the covid pandemic I, like so many of us, found myself with a lot of extra time so I decided to make some plant hangers for myself. I taught myself through YouTtube videos and books and once I started I just couldn’t stop. I found some instructions for weaving a lawn chair in a macrame book from the 70’s that I had bought on eBay. I happened to have some old lawn chair frames that were in need of repair so I taught myself how to weave from that book then started making my own patterns and designs and my little business has grown from there.
